Abstract:
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides a powerful tool for investigating the atomic structure and electronic properties of nanomaterials and nanostructures on the surface. By extending the capabilities of this STM, we have developed several novel STM-based techniques for investigating the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials.
In this talk, I will first introduce three STM-based techniques developed in our group: double-tip STM (DT-STM), STM-induced light emission (STM-LE), and STM-based tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (STM-TERS). DT-STM enables us to measure electrical transport through the nanomaterials. while STM-LE provides access to their optical properties. STM-TERS allows us to investigate vibrational properties with nanoscale spatial resolution.
Here, we focus on individual carbon nanotubes as a nanomaterials. I will discuss nanoscale electrical transport using independently driven double-tip STM, STM-induced light emission from individual CNTs, and the observation of enhanced Raman scattering from individual CNTs using STM-TERS. These results demonstrate how STM-based techniques can provide complementary information on the electrical, optical, and vibrational properties of CNTs at the nanoscale.
